Fairy tales normally end with the girl getting the prince and half of the kingdom, but even without
kissing any frogs, Mary Elizabeth Donaldson won the handsome prince and the whole kingdom.

This story proves that timing is everything in life. Being in the right place at the right time can transform
a girl from being the average Australian girl to a beloved Crown Princess and future queen in the
oldest kingdom of the world.

Once upon a time (The Olympic Games 2000), 28-year old Mary Elizabeth Donaldson together with a
couple of friends entered the popular pub ?Slip Inn? in Sydney. Mary was recovering after breaking up
with her boyfriend of seven years, but the pub was full of Europeans visiting Sydney due to the
Olympics.

Mary?s friends tried to set her up with a nice boy from Greece, who happened to be a prince, but
before she got a really good look, another young man came up to the fairy Mary and introduced
himself; ?Hi, I am Fred!?

Half an hour later, Mary Donaldson realized that ?Fred? was Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark,
whose title one day will change to King Frederik 10, as the heir to the oldest existing kingdom in the
world.

Without knowing anything about the prince or his country, this evening was the beginning of a beautiful
fairy tale in the country of Hans Christian Andersen and fairy tales, Denmark: The beautiful Mary
Elizabeth Donaldson from distant Tasmania in Australia will one day be known as Queen Mary of
Denmark.

This development for the businesswoman, who describes herself ?as a very ordinary person with an
average background?, could not have been predicted by anyone. But it has led Mary to start believing
in fate, as she believes there must have been a reason, why she of all people was to receive the
prince and the kingdom of Denmark.

Looking back, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary, as she is now to be called explains: ?Four
years ago, it would have been impossible to imagine, where I am today. There were so many obstacles
on the way between Australia and Denmark that I have to believe that there is some ?game plan?
behind it. Believing that this was destined to happen also makes it easier for me to deal with the
question of whether I deserve to be her or not. I have to believe that this was bound to happen.?

It was Mary?s friend Beatrice Tarnawski, who initiated going to the Slip Inn Pub in Sydney that
particular night during the Olympics. She participated in the small party that developed and she saw
how Prince Frederik made a pass on Mary even though his cousin, the Greek Prince Nikolaos already
was trying his moves on the fairy Mary. ?When Frederik came back to Sydney first time after the
Olympics in February 2001, I met them on Valentine?s eve in a night club, and Frederik came straight
up to me to thank me for the fact that I actually brought them together?, Beatrice recalls.

She also explains how Mary a couple of nights after meeting Frederik was introduced to the Spanish
Crown Prince Felipe and even though he is a very handsome man, it was clear that Mary had already
made her choice. ?When it became clear that Frederik wouldn?t arrive, Mary left the place in order to
look for Frederik in one of the other ?in? places in Sydney.? Apparently she found him, because
according to Beatrice Tarnawski, the Prince visited Mary?s apartment several times during the
remainder of the Olympics.
